courses and classes![]() Run mainly for the young, usually early teens to twenties. The sessions will include instrumental tuition on guitar, bass and keyboards, with advice given to any busy drummers! Vocals, including harmony and lessons in how to choose the right key for the song. Advice given on ensemble playing and arrangements. My rock schools usually include at least one session on the art of song writing, depending on the duration of the course. Songwriting courses Open to anyone who would like to take part. A typical course will involve listening to work by great songwriters like Cole Porter, Joni Mitchell, Paul McCartney and many more. You don’t need to be able to play an instrument or have any knowledge of music theory, but you may find yourself becoming curious about both after being on the course. I work on rhyming patterns, chord sequences and an in-depth study of the middle eight. People are asked to bring along examples of work in progress. The main aim is to help people with their stuff but many find the study of other songwriters and the company of other would-be songwriters to be quite stimulating and inspiring. Classes in music theory Aimed at people who already play an instrument (beginners included) who find themselves baffled by some of the terminology used. This is meant to be a de-mystification process helping to cure the music theory phobics among us who were put off at an early age. I meet many people on different courses who have a real talent for music but were deterred by the traditional methods employed by those teaching them. These methods don’t suit everyone. They often produce robot-like musicians who don’t actually listen to what they’re playing and discriminate against anyone with a good ear and a natural talent. |
